DePuy Hip Implant Recall

Two types of DePuy hip implants were recalled in August 2010 due to a high incidence of system failures. A hip implant failure requires a second surgery known as revision surgery. Revision surgery is painful and very debilitating, especially for elderly patients.

If you are the recipient of a defective hip implant, you should contact a lawyer immediately. It is important to note that only a qualified hip implant attorney can get you a full financial recovery. Call 1-800-407-8416 to schedule a free and confidential consultation.

Problems Reported with DePuy Hip Implants

The hip replacement recall was initiated after hundreds of patients complained to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that their DePuy implants failed in as little as five years. Hip implants should last a minimum of 15 years. The affected models include:

  • DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular System (sold worldwide)
  • ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System (not sold in the U.S.)

The recall is based on the following findings:

  • Approximately 13 percent of recipients of the ASR™ XL Acetabular System will require revision surgery within 5 years.
  • Roughly 12 percent of patients that have received the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System will need revision surgery.

Signs and Symptoms of Hip Implant Problems

Patients should be aware of the signs and symptoms of a failing hip. If you have a hip implant and begin to experience the following symptoms, you should visit your doctor immediately:

  • Swelling
  • Difficulty walking or standing
  • Recurring pain in the hip, leg, or lower back
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Clicking or grinding noises from the hip

DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits

Lawsuits have already been filed on behalf of more than 100 patients. These lawsuits have been consolidated in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio for pretrial proceedings.

In addition to the injuries caused by early failures, patients are also at risk of complications due to metal poisoning. The hip implants are made with metal parts that rub constantly on each other. The friction can cause tiny shreds of metal to be released into the blood stream, which can result in respiratory problems and nerve damage. Signs this is occurring include fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, and problems with vision and hearing.
