DePuy Hip Replacement Failure

Johnson & Johnson's DePuy unit recalled the ASR™ XL Acetabular System and the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System after hundreds of patients complained to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that their device failed shortly after implantation. Approximately 90,000 of the hip systems were sold worldwide before the recall.

DePuy said it was recalling the hip replacement systems because they were failing at a rate of 12 percent (ASR™ XL Acetabular System) and 13 percent (ASR™ Hip Resurfacing Systems) in as few as five years. Hip implants should last at least 15 years, according to industry standards.

New data from a British orthopedists' group show the failure rates are much higher. According to four surgeons, the DePuy hip replacement systems have a failure rate of 21 percent after four years and 49 percent after six years.

The data was presented at the British Hip Society Annual Conference in March. If this is the case, the company faces hundreds more lawsuits than expected. The company set aside $922 million to cover litigation costs.

Signs & Symptoms of DePuy Hip Replacement Failure

Patients that have received a hip replacement after 2003 have a good chance of having a recalled system. If you have an artificial hip system, check with your doctor to find out if your implant was affected by the recall. If so, monitoring and testing may be required.

Symptoms of a failing hip replacement include:

  • Extreme pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Difficulty standing
  • Swelling in the tissue and bone surrounding the hip
  • Loosening of the implant
  • Hip dislocation or fractures

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention. If your hip replacement has failed, you will most likely require revision surgery.

Another problem with these hip replacement systems is an increased risk of metal poisoning, caused by the metal-on-metal design. Testing to determine if you've been affected by the metal poisoning might also be required.
