Maryland DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits

DePuy Orthopedics is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, one of the world's largest healthcare products companies. DePuy is the maker of two hip implant devices that were recalled by the FDA in 2010; both have "ASR" in their name. "ASR" stands for "Articular Surface Replacement." If you received a hip implant with "ASR" in its name, you might want to contact an attorney, because the failure rate of these implants is so high that the FDA recalled them and DePuy is paying for new hip surgery for patients with these implants.

Unacceptably High Failure Rate

DePuy hip systems have been implanted in tens of thousands of individuals in the U.S. alone. Their hip devices have also been used in the United Kingdom, where a medical devices database revealed that the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip Replacement System's failure rate was a whopping 13 percent, in stark contrast to the 5 percent that is the normal, accepted rate for hip implants (that is, 5 percent of hip implant patients can be expected to need revision surgery within five years of receiving the implant).

When a DePuy Hip Implant Fails

When a DePuy hip implant starts to fail, there are several signs and symptoms to be aware of:

  • severe and constant hip pain
  • swelling in the area of the implant
  • difficulty standing and walking

These symptoms can become debilitating without medical care or revision surgery. Even remedial surgery may not correct the problems caused by a faulty hip implant.

Lawsuits against DePuy Based on Hip Implants

There are already over 3,500 lawsuits in the U.S. against DePuy due to failed hip implants, and this number is expected to grow. Implants like the DePuy ASR™ devices account for about a third of the 250,000 or so hip replacement surgeries performed each year in the U.S.
