Massachusetts DePuy Hip Implant Attorneys

Indiana-based Depuy Orthopedics — a subsidiary of healthcare behemoth Johnson & Johnson — recalled two of its metal artificial hip implants in 2011. The hip implants (the ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip Replacement System and the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System) were recalled because they were causing serious side effects and implant failures in a high rate of patients. The potentially crippling effects of the DePuy hip implants began with symptoms such as:

  • chronic, severe hip pain
  • swelling around the hip implant
  • difficulty with movements that involve the hip

If you live in Massachusetts and you are experiencing such symptoms after a hip implant surgery, be sure to see your doctor, and give some thought to consulting a Massachusetts DePuy hip implant attorney — he or she can tell you the latest news regarding the recall and your legal rights.

Thousands May Be Affected

DePuy acknowledges that approx. 40,000 individuals received one of the two hip implants described above in the period from August 2005 to August 2010. The standard, expected rate of failure for hip implant procedures is five percent; that is, of 100 patients who receive hip implants, five will have trouble with their hip implant that is severe enough to warrant corrective surgery and possibly a new hip implant.

The failure rate for DePuy's ASR™ hip implants is estimated at 13 percent, an unacceptably high rate that was a factor in the recall of these devices.

Additional Problems at DePuy

In January 2012, the FDA released a warning letter that the FDA sent to DePuy in December about some additional serious problems with 14 of their medical devices, including hip systems and knee products. The FDA stated that DePuy wasn't complying with quality-control regulations.
