DePuy Hip Implant Complications

DePuy, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, designed and marketed the two artificial hip systems noted above. In 2010, DePuy announced a global recall of the two ASR™ hip implant systems, following the release of a study based in Great Britain (where DePuy hip implants were also used).

The study, drawing its data from a National Joint Registry, found that one out of every eight patients who received a DePuy ASR™ hip implant had to have revision surgery to remove or replace the hip implant within five years of receiving the implant. This failure rate — 12.5 percent — is far higher than the accepted norm for hip implant failure, which is 5 percent.

The complications requiring hip implant revision surgery include problems such as:

  • grinding sensations in the hip
  • popping sensations in the hip
  • difficulty standing, walking, and even sitting
  • severe swelling around the implant
  • constant and severe hip pain

Lawsuits against DePuy

To date, more than 3,500 individuals have initiated legal actions against DePuy based on alleged problems with the hip implants. DePuy has agreed to pay for many revision surgeries and other costs, but DePuy does not reveal how much money they have paid to individual patients.
