The DePuy ASR™ Hip Implant Recall

DePuy Orthopedics, an Indiana-based subsidiary of the healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson, recalled two of their hip implant models in August 2010:

  • ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System
  • ASR™ XL Acetabular System

A Defective Design May Be the Cause

The ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System was approved for use in patients only outside the U.S., but the ASR™ XL Acetabular System (sometimes known as the ASR™ XL Modular Acetabular Cup System) has been implanted in tens of thousands of patients in the U.S. ("Acetabular" means "pertaining to the acetabulum, the cup-shaped socket of the hip joint".)

The acetabular cup may be the cause of the thousands of reports of severe problems with this hip implant model; some implant experts have suggested that the cup is too shallow, causing problems such as:

  • metal shavings and other debris released into body tissues
  • misalignment of implant components
  • swelling and pain due to the faulty implant
  • difficulty making body movements involving the artificial hip

An Unacceptably High Failure Rate

Although some recipients of the DePuy hip implants are not experiencing any problems, an unacceptably high rate of implant failure has been confirmed for the two DePuy ASR™ hip implant models — 13 percent failure within five years of implant surgery, versus the accepted rate of 5 percent failure within five years.
